Victoria Park

Charlottetown has several parks but Victoria park is by far the largest. It is a waterfront park that stretches up to over 63 acres in area. This park has both environmental and historical significance. With thousands of visitors every day, this is a very popular spot to mingle!
The property that Victoria Park resides in was established in 1789 by Governor Edmund Fanning. The shorefront of the park is 1.5 kilometers long and is packed with several prominent features. Near the eastern boundary of the park, there is a cove which is the discharge point for Spring Park Brook. This place was mostly buried in the late 19th to mid-20th centuries, as part of stormwater management plans for the development of the north and east sections of the park. Again, in the middle, there is the battery point. This place is also known as the old battery point by some. In 1805, the British created a battery in hopes of defending Charlottetown from hostile Americans. The following year, 32 pounder smoothbore guns on wooden carriages were added to the battery. These can still be seen on this site. Then there is the southwestern Duchess point. The battery point and the duchess point are only separated by an approximate distance of 0.5 kilometers.
The Victoria Park has been one of the greatest assets to the City of Charlottetown since its inception in 1873. This area has gone through several changes and multiple development periods over the years. Now it has a ball diamond for you to play baseball and softball in, there are multiple tennis courts for people looking to experience the rush of the sports, the park also consists of a swimming pool for those looking to soak and relax, playground equipment for children and the adults, a skateboard park for the cool kids and a boardwalk along the water for romantic walks with your significant other. Starting from one end of the park, at Brighton Road, the boardwalk crawls along the watery shores up to West Street, stretching to about 1.2 km in length. It was constructed in the summer of 1994 with the intention of being able to walk through the entire length of the city’s waterfront. In the past, the area along the waterside had a very prominent red fence and a walking trail but now it has been replaced by a walkway. There were also a few upgrades made to the seawall along with the new boardwalk therefore walkers can now enjoy the views of the large island sandstone boulders.
The Victoria Park boardwalk is one of the most popular and frequently visited recreational areas in the city and is a fantastic place to come spend time alone and with loved ones. During busy days, you will find hundreds and hundreds of people all over the place in this park. This Park cost approximately $200,000 to build and was done in partnership with the City of Charlottetown and the Cotton Trust. Overall, this park is a fantastic place to spend time and you would find yourself visiting it daily if you lived nearby.
