Isaac
Smith, the leading architect, and builder in Prince Edward Island,
designed Province House in 1839. On the 26th of January, 1847, it was
finished for inauguration as Prince Edward Island’s legislature.
The building’s principal aim was to house a Legislative Assembly on
the second floor.
Also,
on the second floor, Province House has a Legislative Council, which
is where the delegates to the Charlottetown Conference met in
September 1864. The supreme court and judicial offices for the
province of Prince Edward Island were situated on the ground floor of
Province House from 1847 to 1872. The Prince Edward Island government
owns Province House.
Queen
Square is Charlottetown’s main square, which was set aside for
administrative and church buildings in the town’s original layout.
Province House is located in the heart of Queen Square, framing Great
George Street and providing a view of the harbor.
In
1920, and again from 1974 to 1983, the Confederation Chamber was
renovated to reflect its historical significance. The building’s
exterior was restored to its 1850 state, while the legislative
council chamber, library, and administrative offices were renovated
to its 1864 state. On the ground level, the supreme court chamber was
also restored to its original proportions.
